This blog is based on the original post from HK Architecture here.
Every great gym starts with a vision. Ours wasn’t simply to fill a building with equipment—it was to create a space where people genuinely enjoy training, feel part of a community, and have access to everything they need to perform, recover and improve.
Today, Crowns Gym is a premium fitness destination in Beckenham with a rapidly growing community of members. But before opening our doors, the building looked very different.

From Industrial Unit to Premium Training Facility
Our home was originally a two-storey light industrial building, previously occupied by an electrical supplier. Rather than searching for a conventional gym space, we saw the opportunity to completely reimagine the building into something unique.
The transformation allowed us to design every area with purpose, ensuring each space supports a different style of training while creating a welcoming atmosphere from the moment you walk through the doors.
Working alongside HKA Architects, we were able to bring our vision to life and create a facility that reflects everything Crowns Gym stands for.
Designed Around the Way People Train
Every decision throughout the design process was driven by one question:
How can we create the best possible experience for our members?
The result is a facility that combines premium equipment, specialist training spaces and dedicated recovery areas under one roof.
On the ground floor you’ll find:
A welcoming reception area
Fully accessible changing facilities
A spacious open-plan gym featuring premium strength and cardio equipment
A dedicated recovery suite with a sauna and cold plunge
Upstairs, we’ve created specialist spaces designed for every style of training, including:
– The Chamber – our martial arts studio
– The Track – a 20-metre functional training area designed for HYROX preparation, resistance running and conditioning classes
– Room 101 – a calm, dedicated space for yoga and Pilates
– A Red Light Therapy room
– A private sports therapy and treatment room
Rather than trying to be everything to everyone, we wanted to create a gym where members could lift, run, recover and improve without needing multiple memberships elsewhere.
Built Around Experience
Founder Clide Delaney has spent years working in gyms across Ireland and London as a personal trainer.
That experience shaped every aspect of Crowns Gym.
Having trained thousands of people over the years, Clide understood what members often find frustrating in traditional gyms—poor layouts, overcrowded equipment, limited recovery facilities and environments that lack personality.
Crowns Gym was designed to solve those problems.
Equipment spacing, training flow and the overall member experience were carefully considered from day one to create a gym that’s practical, enjoyable and inspiring to train in.
Creating an Atmosphere Unlike Any Other
A gym should motivate you the moment you walk in.
We wanted Crowns Gym to feel premium without feeling intimidating.
Throughout the building, deep navy tones are complemented by bold yellow accents and carefully designed lighting that changes throughout the day to create an energetic yet welcoming environment.
Large mirrors help maximise the sense of space while enhancing the overall aesthetic, giving the gym its distinctive character.
The result is a space that feels modern, premium and unmistakably Crowns.
Overcoming the Challenges
Transforming an industrial building into a modern fitness facility wasn’t straightforward.
The building presented a number of structural and logistical challenges, from planning requirements to ensuring the
gym integrated respectfully within the surrounding residential area.
Working closely with HKA and the wider project team, every challenge was carefully addressed while maintaining our vision for the finished space.
Looking back, it’s hard to imagine the building any other way.
A Gym Built for the Community
One of the biggest reasons we chose this location was its accessibility.
Situated within walking distance of Clock House Station, Kent House Station, Beckenham Road Tram Stop and several major bus routes, Crowns Gym is convenient for commuters while remaining firmly rooted within the local community.
Being located on a residential road has helped us become far more than just another gym—we’ve become a place where neighbours, friends and families train together.
The Response So Far
Since opening our doors, the feedback from members has exceeded our expectations.
People regularly comment on how spacious, welcoming and thoughtfully designed the gym feels. The dedicated training zones allow different workouts to happen simultaneously without feeling overcrowded, while our recovery facilities have become a favourite part of many members’ routines.
Perhaps most importantly, we’ve built something that goes beyond the equipment and the building itself.
We’ve built a community.
That’s what Crowns Gym has always been about, and it’s what will continue to drive us as we grow.
If you haven’t experienced Crowns Gym yet, we’d love to welcome you through our doors and show you what makes our community so special.
