When it comes to elite-level fitness and recovery, few athletes have the experience and insight of former world champion boxer George Groves. Known for his explosive power, technical skills, and resilience in the ring, Groves has faced some of boxing’s toughest competitors. But what’s his top wellness secret for staying in peak condition? You might be surprised by its simplicity.
In an exclusive insight for Crowns Gym Beckenham, George Groves shared his number one tip for effective recovery: skipping.
“As a boxer, my tip for recovery is skipping. I love skipping. All boxers skip – it’s a must-do thing. But it doesn’t really cross over into a lot of other sports or industries, not that I’ve noticed. Skipping is a great way to recover the body. It’s low impact, but you’re still bouncing on your toes, so you’re staying light and springy.”
While many associate skipping with high-intensity cardio, Groves emphasizes its unique role in recovery. Unlike heavy running sessions that can strain joints, skipping is low-impact yet effective in keeping the body agile and responsive.
George adds,
“Obviously, you pair that off with maybe a deep stretch or something at the end of a session. If you can do that and remember to do it, have the patience and the discipline to do that at the end of all your sessions or a couple of sessions a week, that would definitely help you in your recovery.”
Combining light skipping with deep stretching improves flexibility, reduces muscle stiffness, and accelerates recovery.
At Crowns Gym Beckenham, we’re proud to offer the perfect environment to apply these principles. Whether you’re hitting our combat training area, joining a conditioning class, or unwinding in our infrared sauna and plunge pool, you can integrate skipping and stretching into your fitness routine for optimal results.
